Low Floor Vehicles Built for Accessibility & Efficiency

Explore the benefits of low floor vehicle conversions—easy access, safer manual handling, and customised solutions for every industry.

At AKFS, we don’t just build low floor vehicles - we pioneered them!

We were the originators of low floor vehicle conversions using the AL-KO low floor chassis, and we remain the UK’s leading authority in this space. Every design we produce is an original AKFS concept, born from hands-on collaboration with our customers and shaped by real-world industry feedback.

Designed for Easy Access

A low floor commercial vehicle is designed with a load-bearing floor that sits significantly closer to the ground compared to standard commercial vehicles - particularly those built on traditional chassis cabs with higher-mounted chassis rails. By lowering the height of the vehicle’s base platform, the low floor design offers a range of operational benefits, especially in environments where ease of access and manual handling are key considerations.

Direct Access to Cargo Area

This configuration typically eliminates the need for multiple steps at the side or rear entrance of the vehicle. In the case of our commercial vehicle conversions, it provides direct, near-ground-level access to the cargo or bed area, enhancing both convenience and efficiency.

Easier, Safer Loading & Unloading

Whether used for transporting tools (such as in the Plant & Go® Tool Hire Vehicle), machinery (Plant & Go® Landscaper), or traffic management equipment (Drop & Go® TMV), the lowered entry point - typically at the rear of the vehicle, but not always - reduces the physical strain associated with frequent loading and unloading. It also minimises the need to lift heavy or bulky items over high sills. Additionally, when winching machinery onto the bed, the low floor configuration results in a shallower loading angle, making operations smoother and safer when using a tailgate, ramp, or loading ramps.

Customised Chassis for Better Performance

Many of our low floor vehicles incorporate the AL-KO low floor chassis, which enables full customisation. Working in collaboration with AL-KO, we can design vehicles with bespoke wheelbases - allowing for improved load distribution, better driving characteristics, and enhanced on-road performance. These tailored configurations ensure that each vehicle is engineered for the task at hand, delivering a refined, operator-focused experience without compromise.

Our Full Range of Low Floor Vehicles

The Benefits of a Low Floor Vehicle

Any of our low floor chassis conversions deliver a range of practical and performance-based benefits that make them ideally suited to a wide variety of commercial applications. Whether it’s for traffic management, plant and tool hire, logistics, or grounds maintenance, the advantages are tangible across the board.

Improved Accessibility

With a significantly reduced floor height, low floor conversions for the most part enable a single-step access to the cargo or working area. This is especially valuable in kerbside operations or applications involving frequent loading and unloading, where safe and efficient access is a priority.

Reduced Manual Handling Strain

Operators no longer need to lift tools, equipment, or plant over high sills or tailboards. The lower loading height helps reduce the risk of strains, slips, and workplace injuries - making them ideal for businesses focused on health and safety compliance and operator well-being.

Shallower Loading Angles

The reduced deck height naturally creates a flatter loading ramp angle, whether using assisted tailgates or loading ramps. This makes it much easier to winch or drive machinery onto the bed, improving both safety and speed of operation, particularly for heavy or wheeled plant.

Greater Payload Efficiency

The AL-KO chassis offers a lightweight yet robust frame, allowing more of the vehicle’s Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) to be dedicated to usable payload. This is especially important for businesses looking to maximise capacity while remaining within 3.5T licensing limits. The available payload increases when Al-KO’s 4500kg GVW low floor conversion is requested. AL-KO also provide for certain vehicle solutions a 5000kg, and 5500kg chassis conversion.

Custom Wheelbase & Body Options

Through collaboration with AL-KO, we can configure a bespoke wheelbase to suit the specific requirements of your application. Whether it's optimising space for racking, improving axle weight distribution, or tailoring the turning radius, the chassis can be adapted to deliver a balanced, purpose-built platform.

Superior Driving Dynamics

Lower centre of gravity means improved stability and handling, especially under load. Vehicles built on the AL-KO low floor chassis feel more planted on the road, improving operator confidence and reducing fatigue on longer journeys.

Increased Internal Volume

By lowering the floor and removing unnecessary step-ups onto the body, we gain more usable internal height - which is ideal for walk-in storage, mobile workshops, or equipment that requires upright positioning.

Serving a Wide Range of Industries

Several industries and sectors stand to benefit significantly from low floor vehicles, thanks to their enhanced accessibility, safety, and load-handling capabilities.

In essence, any industry that values safer manual handling, greater payload efficiency, and operator-friendly access will find our low floor vehicle solutions to be a highly effective and tailored investment.

Traffic Management

The traffic management and highways sector is one of the key beneficiaries. With frequent kerbside operations involving cones, signage, and mobile traffic light systems, the single-step access provided by low floor vehicles like the Drop & Go® Traffic Management Vehicle ensures safer manual handling and faster deployment at the roadside.

Plant & Tool Hire

The plant and tool hire industry also gains substantial value. With the regular loading and unloading of compact plant and site equipment, vehicles such as the Plant & Go® Tool Hire Vehicle offer shallower loading angles and reduced physical strain on operators - particularly when winching equipment onto the vehicle, as this can be done from ground level.

Grounds Maintenance

In the grounds maintenance and landscaping sector, transporting tools, materials, and smaller plant machinery is part of the daily routine. Vehicles like the Plant & Go® Landscaper benefit from better load distribution and enhanced access on uneven terrain - especially when configured at 4500kg GVW, where the available payload is increased.

Logistics

Logistics and multi-drop delivery services also benefit from low floor designs. Vehicles like the Low Floor Box Van allow for walk-in access and improved internal height, making it safer and quicker to load and unload goods across multiple stops throughout the day. Similarly, utility companies or mobile service teams find the Low Floor Box Vehicle ideal for operating as a mobile workshop. These conversions offer improved ergonomics, standing room, and internal configurations tailored for tool storage, equipment access, and onboard lighting and power systems.

Local Authorities

Local authorities and grounds maintenance teams require vehicles capable of transporting landscaping tools, waste bins, and seasonal equipment. Bespoke low floor vehicles built on the AL-KO chassis allow for easier lifting of heavier tools and more secure storage, with safe access from kerbside environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some questions we often get asked about our Low Floor Vehicles. If you have any more questions, please get in touch with our team.

What is a low floor vehicle used for?

We provide a variety of car transporters, including open, closed, and enclosed models to suit different needs. Our range is designed to accommodate both personal and professional requirements.

What’s the difference between a low floor and standard commercial vehicle?

The key difference lies in the chassis configuration. A low floor vehicle is built on a specially lowered platform - such as the AL-KO low floor chassis - which enables a significantly reduced floor height and typically allows for single-step access to the load area. The AL-KO low floor conversion begins with a unique vehicle supplied by the Stellantis Group, known as a Back-to-Back cab. These cabs are delivered directly from the Stellantis factory to AL-KO in a cab-only format, joined together in pairs without chassis rails, axles, or rear wheels.

From this point, depending on the customer’s specific requirements, a tailored conversion process begins. A bespoke wheelbase is selected, and the AL-KO chassis components are integrated to create a purpose-built, low floor platform. This level of control over wheelbase length, axle selection, and load distribution results in improved overall vehicle dynamics, handling, and payload characteristics.

In contrast, standard commercial vehicles are typically built on factory chassis cabs with higher-mounted rails, resulting in elevated loading heights and increased physical effort during loading and unloading tasks.

Are low floor vehicles available in electric models?

Yes, certain low floor vehicles are available on electric platforms. AKFS can advise on low floor solutions compatible with electric base vehicles, depending on your operational needs, payload requirements, and chassis availability. As electric vehicle technology continues to evolve, more low floor EV options are becoming viable across a range of applications.

Can I customise a low floor vehicle for my business?
